▶ MSC IN DATA SCIENCE 

 

MSc in Data Science is a joint programme launched by School of Data Science and School of Management and Economics, in collaboration with Shenzhen Research Institute of Big Data and Shenzhen Finance Institute. The programme is aimed to equip students with fundamental knowledge as well as skills in big data and business analytics, and provide students with the cutting-edge theories and methods of big data technology, so that our graduates will be able to tackle issues of data capture, storage and analysis in various sectors, including business, government, security, healthcare, biology, science and environment. All courses are taught in English. Programme duration is 24 months. Alternatively, students may participate in a wide range of industrial internships, research work, world-wide exchange programmes, studying more courses and extend their studies to 36 months. Faculty members from two schools and research institutes will serve as instructors together.

 

 STUDY MODE AND PERIOD

 

The study mode is full-time for all students in the MSc in Data Science Programme. The general study period for MSc in Data Science Programme is 2 years (3 terms per year) and the maximum study period is 3 years.

▶ ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

 

 

1) Qualifications for admission

Graduated from a recognized university and obtained a Bachelor's degree, normally with honours not lower than Second Class; or achieving an average grade of not lower than "B" (GPA 3.0/4.0 or 80/100)or similar qualifications equivalent to an honours degree.

  

2) To fulfill the University’s minimum English language requirements for admission to postgraduate programmes, applicants should have:

A. obtained a degree from a university in Hong Kong1 or taken a degree programme of which the medium of instruction was English; or

 

B. achieved scores in the following English Language tests2 as indicated:

i. TOEFL: 550 (Paper-based)/79 (Internet-based);

ii. IELTS (Academic): 6.5;

iii. GMAT: Band 21 (Verbal); or

 

C. obtained a pass grade in English in one of the following examinations:

i. Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (AS Level);

ii.  Hong Kong Higher Level Examination;

iii. CUHK Matriculation Examination;

iv. General Certificate of Education Examination (GCE) Advanced Level (A-Level)/Advanced Subsidiary Level (AS-Level); or

 

D. achieved Level 4 or above in the English Language subject of the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) Examination; or

 

E. obtained a recognized professional qualification, provided that the examination was conducted in English.

 

Notes:

1. This is based on the understanding that English is the medium of instruction of degree programmes offered by universities in Hong Kong. Moreover, graduates from universities in Hong Kong should have fulfilled the English language requirements of the institution concerned when they were admitted to the degree programmes. The CUHKSZ Graduate School may request applicants to provide additional supporting documents to prove their English proficiency.

2. TOEFL and IELTS scores are considered valid for two years from the test date. GMAT scores are considered valid for five years from the test date.

 

3) Application Method

- Applicants are required to pay a nonrefundable application fee of RMB300. Supporting documents (pdf files) are also required to be submitted online (https://pgapply.cuhk.edu.cn/).

 

4) Required Documents

- A copy of Bachelor's and/or Master's Degree Certificate or Student Status Certificate

- A copy of transcript

- A copy of TOEFL/IELTS/GMAT score sheet

- Curriculum Vitae (English)

- Personal Statement (English)

- A copy of ID card

- Contact details of at least two referees (An email inviting the referee to provide their reference for the applicant will be sent automatically by the application system.)

- A copy of Professional Certificates (if applicable), and other supporting documents

 

5) Shortlist

- Written Exam (English) – 2 hours

Python - 50% + Statistics and Mathematics - 50%

- Interview (Individual interview in English for 10-15 mins)

 

6) Offer

-Conditional Offer

Satisfactory completion of the Bachelor’s degree programme with an overall average result of B or above;

Fulfilment of the English proficiency requirement.

-Unconditional Offer

Have met all the admission requirements.
