MSc in Data Science is a joint programme launched by School of Data Science and School of Management and Economics, in collaboration with Shenzhen Research Institute of Big Data and Shenzhen Finance Institute.
Master of Science in Data Science Programme is a career-oriented program providing students with a large number of internships and job opportunities each year. At the same time, a significant number of students have the idea of pursuing a doctorate. In order to meet students’ needs, the programme team held an online expo sharing session on February 28 (Friday). In this sharing meeting, two directors of the Data Science Programme, Professor Zhang bohui, Professor Zhao junhua and Professor Li zhen, were invited to introduce their ongoing research. Meanwhile, we also invited Yan xu, a doctoral candidate of the Class of 2018 majoring in Data Science Programme, to share his application experience.
President's Chair Professor
Co-director of the Master of Science in Data Science Programme
Executive Vice President, School of Economics and Management
Director of FinTech and Social Finance Research Center, Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Finance
Professor Zhang bohui studies fintech, media, Chinese capital markets and international capital markets. His paper have been recognized by the world first-class financial, accounting and business magazines, such as the Financial Research Review, Journal of Financial Economics, Studies of Accounting, Management Science, the Financial and Quantitative Analysis, International Business Studies, Financial Review, Journal of Banking and Finance, Journal of Corporate Finance, Journal of Financial Markets and the International Monetary and Financial Periodicals.
Professor zhang now mainly focuses on fintech. In the sharing session, besides introducing his research field, he also introduced the matters needing attention about applying for doctor's degree. According to him, the biggest difference between doctoral students and graduate students is that graduate students are in the dissemination of knowledge and doctoral students in the creation of knowledge. He also talks about different career options after graduation.

Research Assistant Professor
Research Fields: Deep Learning, Protein Structure Prediction, Computer Vision
Professor Li obtained his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Sun Yat-Sen University in 2011 and 2014 respectively, and his doctorate from the University of Hong Kong in 2018. He is also a visiting scholar at the University of Chicago and the Toyota Research Institute of Chicago in 2016 and 2018. He joined The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen) and the Shenzhen Institute of Big Data in September 2018.
Professor li's research direction is mainly to use data mining and deep learning algorithm for protein structure prediction, from sequence level to folding level. He is a leading member of the CASP12 champion of the protein structure prediction competition and has won the PLOS CB 2018 award for the latest breakthrough and innovation. He works on both machine learning algorithms and 3d computer vision problems, such as RGB-D semantic segmentation and shape completion. Professor Li is also the supervisor of Yan xu, a postgraduate student of the Class of 2018 majoring in Master of Science in Data Science Programme. He has provided a lot of help in Yan xu’s successful application for doctor's degree.
Student in the Class of 2018 majoring in Master of Science in Data Science Programme
Graduated from Sun Yat-Sen University, majoring in Applied Statistics
PHD student in the Class of 2020 majoring in Computer and Information Engineering in The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen)
Yan xu is a student in the Class of 2018 majoring in Master of Science in Data Science Programme, and has successfully applied for the doctoral program of Computer and Information Engineering in The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen). Xu has been working as Professor Li's research assistant during his master studies. In the sharing session, he shared his ideas about how to choose the direction of doctoral study. The first step, he says, is to browse the official website for professors to see what research is right for you and then send an email to the professor to express your desire to be his/her RA(research assistant). After reading the materials of our professors, he sent an email to
Professor Li zhen and excelled himself to be his RA. In spite of the difficulties he encountered at the very beginning, he gained much experience being the RA and it contributed to his successful application of PHD program. For students who want to apply for a doctor's degree in our university, Yan xu mentioned that attitude determines altitude, which can be the key to PHD offers. For undergraduate students who want to apply for a doctor's degree, the doctor's professor will review RA for the professor who helps the student do research. If the professor is not satisfied with the students' performance as the RA, he may not get the offer.
What kind of people are suitable for a PhD? According to Yan xu, pursuing a doctoral degree is not a test of personal ability, but of endurance. A PhD is a touchstone for someone’s academic abilities. Last but not the least, students are suggested to save more time for academic research during the doctoral studies.
